Ken Schmidt

The former director of
communications for Harley-Davidson Motor Company, Ken has played an active
role in one of the most celebrated turnarounds in corporate history.
From 1982-1990, Schmidt
was a member of the Chicago office of Bozell Public Relations. In 1985, he
was asked to work with the struggling Harley-Davidson as their primary ‘spin
doctor’ to help restore the company’s image and create demand for its
motorcycles.
In 1990, Schmidt left
Bozell Public Relations to become director of Harley-Davidson’s corporate
and financial communications, as well as to serve as the company’s primary
spokesperson to the media and the financial communities. He appeared
numerous times on network news programs and was frequently called upon by
business and professional media to share his insights on non-traditional
communications and marketing. With these new responsibilities, his
challenge was to help create demand for Harley-Davidson motorcycles by
restoring the company’s image with motorcyclists and the global public. He
was gradually able to restore market leadership and profitability to
Harley-Davidson, and today the unique motorcycles outstrip supply worldwide.
His presentation, “The
Rise, Fall, and Rise of Harley-Davidson” is a fascinating story of building
an entirely new corporate culture, of rekindling relationships with
customers, and reaching out to new ones in completely untraditional ways.
